After completing his undergraduate training at the then University of Natal, Prof Sithombo Maqungo completed his internship at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth before moving on to complete his Community Service at Bisho and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals in the Eastern Cape.

This compulsory period was followed by a 1 year stint back in Livingstone Hospital as a Medical Officer in Orthopaedic Surgery where his love of the specialty really blossomed. His early interest in the subject was nurtured carefully by Drs MV Ngcelwane, R Van Der Linden and L Bazylczuk.

Prof Maqungo then spent a year in England, working in various NHS and private sector hospitals. The other half of his stay was spent travelling continental Europe.

He returned to South Africa in 2004 to commence postgraduate specialist training at the University of Cape Town. Here, He was trained by some of the country’s leading orthopaedic surgeons and professors. He was very impressed by the Cape Town method and tradition and when an opportunity arose to join the full-time academic staff, he grabbed it with both hands.

After obtaining his fellowship qualification in Orthopaedic Surgery, he spent some time in Jerusalem, Israel at the Hadassah Hebrew University Hospital as well as at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, USA as an ‘AO Gordon Siboto Travelling Fellow in Pelvis and Acetabular Trauma Surgery’. This was under the tutelage of world famous Professors Rami Mosheiff and David Helfet respectively.

Prof Maqungo returned to Cape Town in 2010 to take up his current position at Groote Schuur and Vincent Pallotti Hospitals.

In 2017 Prof Maqungo took academic sabatical and worked as an Orthopaedic Trauma Specialist at the Royal London Hospital in London, England. The hospital runs the busiest Trauma Unit in Europe and this is where he honed his skills in pelvis fragility fracture surgery.

He maintains a strong academic interest as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cape Town and has presented numerous papers at local and international peer reviewed Orthopaedic meetings.

He is also a reviewer for the South African Orthopaedic Journal.

As a faculty member of both AO Trauma South Africa and AO Trauma Europe, Prof Maqungo has chaired and organised local training courses for surgeons and theatre scrub sisters, and has presented lectures and practical demonstrations to local and international audiences.

· Hip replacement and fracture surgery.

· Pelvis and Acetabulum fracture reconstruction.

· Hip fracture and orthopaedic trauma surgery

· Orthopaedic management of osteoporosis and fragility fractures.

· Orthopaedic management of polytraumatised patients.

· Orthopaedic management of gunshot injuries.
